Level Up!

Hey, Look, Giants!!!

Playing the Game Bluesheet

If Hey, Look, Giants!!! was a real game, the following information would be useful and relevant.

Stats

Your GM will tell you where these are displayed in your run, and how to advance them.

Hearts is a stat which advances a Character’s Level, which starts at Level 1. Every 3 Hearts adds 1 Character Level. (e.g. 6 Hearts gets a character to Character Level 3; 1 Heart is still Character Level 1.) Once gained, Hearts cannot be lost. You gain Hearts by completing goals and quests.

Character Level upgrades make it possible to defeat Bosses and other Monsters of greater Threat Level. Raise your Character Level enough to win through to the end, and you will save the world! Besides, each Character Level upgrade feels great! Some of your abilities may increase, and that’s worth a dance!

Threat Level is a numerical value showing how ticked off the game’s enemies are. The Threat Level also increases as you work through the chapters of the game, making the Monsters and Bosses more dangerous, until you finally reach the ultimate fight.

Other stats listed on your sheet are quite useful in the Hey, Look, Giants!!! world. Apparently, these statistics are far less useful Here, wherever Here is.

You know how amazing your Power Moves work in the Hey, Look, Giants!!! world. They are Things You Can Do to invoke powers that you have, under your practiced control. The higher your Character Level, the better these Power Moves seem to work.

Your Special Abilities confound your opponents, and give you another advantage against the Monsters and Villains of the Hey, Look, Giants!!! world.

You are NOT in your world now. Here is strange to you. The Rules of How Things Work feel different. You cannot summon Magic, you cannot reach into the Unreachable Realms, and there are no magic doors to the Shiny Towers.

Here your Power Moves and Special Abilities may fail, and do so in a spectacular fashion. Any attempt to use one of these capabilities against another player works or fails as the targeted player decides, preferably with unintended comedic or dramatic repercussions. Any attempt to use one of these capabilities against an object in the room must be decided by the nearest player or GM, also with unintended comedic or dramatic repercussions.

Game Progression

Here are the seven chapters of the game:

Chapter 1
The Crown of the Nine Emperors has been discovered! Whichever side gets it gains great Magical Influence.

Chapter 2
The Oracle of Lemue is being attacked! The Mystic Giants attack the Oracle and their followers in an attempt to suppress news that the Noble Rebellion may be successful.

Chapter 3
The Mystic Giants crackdown, hard, on Unterrund, in an attempt to blame them for their own problems.

Chapter 4
The Mystic Giants start a great fire in the Great Library of Themisla. It should be put out; books should be saved.

Chapter 5
The Mystic Giants intend to win a Great Race in the Monarchy of ‘Sess, to prove their superiority.

Chapter 6
The Mystic Giants attack the Pacifican Archipelago.

Chapter 7
The Mystic Giants’ Final Battle.

The Rebellion

The Mystic Giants struck hard when they took control of the world. They struck Good and Evil, even when those Evil forces might have made useful Allies. They exiled all of the Royals and Nobles, including their protectors, the Patriots of Forever. Hope seemed lost, until rumors spread of The Last Royal. This one brave soul is marshalling all of those harmed by the Mystic Giants into one glorious Noble Rebellion.

Kids?
There are no children in the Hey, Look, Giants!!! world. The Mini-Ones of Minions are just short adults. It seems these children have come from Here, and are now wandering through your world. Who are these children and why are they in your world? Hopefully, they won’t be in any kind of Distress or need your aid. Their items are around here, which might give you clues to their History, Special Abilities and Power Moves.

Here

What the heck is this place, Here? How come you have more freedom to do whatever you want? These new missions and quests are unexpectedly strange. Why can’t we find an oracle, a cryptic set of runes, or an NPC to give us a mission? Where is Helen the Bard, always ready to send us on a Quest? What is Here, only in this confined space, that we have to look at or solve? What is our Quest? How is this part of the mission to save the world?

Distress Calls

Characters in the game can make “Distress Calls” out to their deities and patrons. Sometimes, these deities and patrons offer help or guidance through the current danger. In Hey, Look, Giants!!! those deities and patrons are you and your controller!

Winning (or Losing)

Avoid threats, complete missions, (save kids?), and Level Up! That's the path that leads to victory! You lose by doing the opposite.
