Content Concerns for the Tales of the Future
First, your safety during play is critical. If you have any concerns, let's talk privately about those concerns beforehand. We want you and everyone else in the game to have a good experience. These LARPs, like many others, may not be suitable for all players. Your safest choice may simply be not to play, and that's fine.
Second, this is a LARP for adults. It is not suitable for children.
Third, this is a LARP about difficult ethical and moral choices. It is not suitable for all adults.
Fourth, it is difficult to summarize complex Tale issues into a brief description. This is our best attempt to spell out what we and our editors believe are the sensitive subjects. It is, by the nature of LARP, incomplete, because we don't have knowledge of or control over what you and the other players may bring to the environment. Again, if you have concerns, let's talk about it beforehand.
Volume 1 contains stories of death and the choices we make about it. Not everyone can be saved. One Tale talks of heinous crime, murder, and medical experimentation, to that level of detail — and is much more about the punishment for those crimes. One Tale deals with the aftermath of an abusive relationship and the art that comes out of it. One Tale deals with a planetary pandemic that kills all of the biological sentients, as witnessed by those who are left behind. There are also themes dealing with economic and social inequality.
Volume 2 contains stories of contact between races which may have radically different mindsets. One Tale wrestles with what to do about an artifact that is culturally offensive. Another Tale deals with the potential horrors of radical body modifications. There's a Tale struggling with a disastrous climate catastrophe and its aftermath. One Tale asks what kind of revenge might be appropriate for genocide, if any. Sentience comes in many forms, and there are bee, dinosaur, and giant spider characters in the Tales.
Volume 3 contains a diverse set of stories of contact between races facing challenging, impossible choices. One Tale wrestles with the collision between religion and science. Another Tale has themes involving possible harm and violence towards animals. One Tale requires a choice between life and death. One Tale deals with attempted murder.
Finally, it's also difficult to summarize complex Tales asking interesting and hard ethical moral dilemmas in a way that doesn't make them all sound like terrible experiences. We want the Tales to challenge you, to get you thinking, to see what answers you can find. There is also some comedy, some lighter moments, and some content that doesn't need an explicit warning. Just ask anyone who's played one of our other Tale LARPs. It's why our Tale LARPs run over and over again, with new audiences asking us to run them.
Character Gender and Relationships
There are three important notes about gender and relationships:
-
All characters are written with they/them pronouns. Players can choose the pronouns they want used for their characters in the game. This information should be added to the character name displayed for each Tale when played virtually.
-
In any given Tale, some group of characters may be in a relationship. If you are unable to play intense relationship drama that would be difficult or impossible because it does not match your real life relationships, then you should choose a different game.
-
Some characters belong to races that don't have two genders.
We have tried to make this game as accessible as possible. If you have concerns, let's talk about it beforehand.
